Contact Congress for Religious Freedom in Burma!

On February 1st of 2021, the military of Burma launched a coup to overthrow the country’s democratically elected government. Many of Burma’s elected leaders have been detained and the military has violently cracked down on protestors.  The coup inflamed the ongoing violence perpetrated by the military for years against Chin, Karen, Kachin, and other ethnic and religious minorities, with the military destroying whole villages and places of worship.

The country’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been severely hindered by the military junta’s actions. While the military expends its energy targeting Burma’s own people, the pandemic has ravaged the country and experts estimate that 10-15 million people may die by the time Covid is finished. The military is complicit in this death toll as it continues to withhold lifesaving oxygen for its own use and even targets medical professionals treating protestors with violence. Faith communities have been hit hard with the virus as well, with a reported 155 Chin Christian ministers dead as of August 2021.

Your member of the U.S. Congress can take action to support freedom for the people of Myanmar by supporting and co-sponsoring legislation calling for a full U.S. government and international response to free the imprisoned leaders of Burma, targeted sanctions on funding streams for the Burmese military, and support for the religious and ethnic groups that face ongoing violence.

Take a stand for the freedom of Burma by sending a letter to your member of Congress today. Take one minute to submit the form below to speak out!
