religious freedom for uyghurs

Help stand for freedom for these oppressed people

The Chinese Communist government is currently committing a campaign of genocide against the Uyghur people of the Xinjiang region in China. In a brutal effort to destroy their cultural and religious identity, the Communist party has implemented intrusive technological surveillance, modern-day slavery, forced sterilizations and abortions, and imprisonment in so-called “re-education” concentration camps.

The government also uses many Uyghurs as slave labor to produce goods in Xinjiang and in several other regions of China. Government and media reports have determined that:

  • Many Uyghurs face enslavement through forced labor fields & factories

  • Products, including face masks, made with forced Uyghur labor have entered and been sold in American and western markets

  • Evidence of Uyghur forced labor was found in the supply chains of 82 global companies, including Apple, BMW, Gap, Nike, and Volkswagen

Uyghur People

The Uyghurs are a Turkic-speaking minority ethnic group that have lived in central Asia for thousands of years.

About eleven million Uyghurs live in the northwestern region of Xinjiang, China and the large majority are Muslim.

Learn more about these people and why they are facing persecution below.

Concentration Camps

The Chinese government imprisons over one million Uyghurs and other Muslims in concentration camps. In these facilities, named "reeducation schools" by Chinese authorities, Uyghurs are not allowed to practice many of their beliefs and are indoctrinated in the Communist Party's ideology.

Genocide Determination

The U.S. government made the determination in January of 2021 that the People’s Republic of China, under the direction and control of the Chinese Communist Party, has committed genocide against the Uyghurs and other ethnic and religious minority groups in Xinjiang, China.

Forced Sterilization and Abortion

The Chinese government is assaulting the future of the Uyghur people through forcibly sterilizing women and aborting children.

Some experts are calling this coordinated campaign to reduce Uyghur birthrates a “demographic genocide.” The AP reports that "The state regularly subjects minority women to pregnancy checks, and forces intrauterine devices, sterilization and even abortion on hundreds of thousands"

Modern Day Slavery

Chinese officials coerce many former camp prisoners and local Muslim residents to work as modern day slave labor. Uyghurs are often shipped far from their home to work in factories across China.

The products of these persecuted Uyghurs are even sold in markets throughout the world. Take a minute to learn what you can do to stop this modern day slavery.

Technological Surveillance

Even those not imprisoned in the camps still face the virtual bonds of intrusive technological surveillance.

Through cameras, phone tracking, and AI analysis, Chinese authorities look for any indication of potential non-compliance with their social vision. Residents of Xinjiang are rated on a social compliance scale based on this surveillance

This technologies are not only used in Xinjiang, but are potentially going to be used in the rest of China and are already being exported to other authoritarian governments.
